Dick Cheney's charges that the country is less safe because of the way Barack Obama has handled national security matters don't hold water, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday. "To suggest that somehow we have become much less safer because of the actions of the administration, I don't think that's borne out by the facts," Powell said on CBS's "Face the Nation."
Powell pointed out that Obama has kept in place most of the programs enacted by the Bush administration. "The Transportation Security Administration created by George Bush is still in action working in our airports," Powell told host Bob Schieffer. "They take care of me every day that I go to an airport."
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence was also created under President Bush, "and it is still under President Obama, working hard," Powell continued. "Our counterterrorism authorities and forces are hard at work. Our law enforcement officials are hard at work. We have gone after the enemy in Afghanistan with 50,000 more troops, more predators are striking al-Qaida and Taliban leaders in Pakistan. We have continued the policies that President Bush put in place with respect to Iraq. And so I don't know where the claim comes that we are less safe."

There aren't a lot of events scheduled for coverage this evening, leaving plenty of time for what should be one of the most memorable competitions of these Games — the finals of ice dancing. With spectacular routines and two contending U.S. teams (Meryl Davis and Charle White, and Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto), the ratings should be right up there with Dancing with the Stars. "We've had to keep stepping up the athletic program," says Belbin. "The lifts are so much more acrobatic." Also on the docket is the high-flying aerial final of freestyle skiing, with U.S. contenders Ryan St. Onge, the 2009 World Champion, and Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, known for attempting the sport's most difficult tricks. "I just don't think it's possible to do more than three flips and five twists," says Peterson. And the last medals in ski jumping are up for grabs in the team large hill final, with teen sensation Gregor Schlierenzauer leading the favored Austrians.

Chris Harrison
If you still have questions about what happened with The Bachelor's Rozlyn and a member of the production team, you'll soon find out. That's the word from host Chris Harrison, who promises Monday's women-tell-all episode will include more of the ousted competitor's "antics" and "desperate attempts to get 15 more minutes of fame." Harrison says the episode will also explore what might have been with Jake Pavelka and the departed Ali, adding, "feelings are still there."
TVGuide.com: Will we learn more about Ali's choice to leave Jake for her job?
Chris Harrison: I know there's been a lot of questions about why she didn't get the time off, because she knew she was going on the show, but she'll explain all that in great detail. It was really just an unfortunate misunderstanding and mistake that led to her having to leave, and so it was really sad that it happened, and it didn't even need to happen.
TVGuide.com: What about her and Jake's interaction?
Harrison: The first thing he says is, "I can't believe you left, I fully expected you to just show up in St. Lucia." What was funny is when I talked to [Ali] privately, she said, "I expected him to just fly to San Francisco and get me." I think they both were expecting the same thing. It's just one of those really unfortunate instances, but the feelings are still there.
The Bachelor: Where Are They Now?
TVGuide.com: Will Rozlyn tell her side of the story?
Harrison: Rozlyn is back in full force as only Rozlyn can be. I got some heat and so did the show for being vague and so I went into the show [and] told everyone we're going to get the truth out. You will hear from the women explosive new details that you have never heard before, because none of them have ever spoken about it until now. There will be 100 percent no question in anyone's mind, other than Rozlyn's, of course. She's the only one confused about it in that relationship. The funny part, not even the guy involved in the relationship is confused. And when I tell you explosive new details, I mean details. Nothing vague about any of this. Time, place, everything — you will hear it all.
Chris Harrison on Bachelor scandal: Rozlyn "started this firestorm"
TVGuide.com: So after the special airs, there will be no doubt about what happened?
Harrison: It's not a he-said, she-said thing — everybody knows what happened. It only behooves her to continue this and she's the only one still talking about this. We are so done with her and her antics and her desperate attempts to get 15 more minutes of fame and that's what this is about and we don't care.
TVGuide.com: Anything you can tell us about the finale?
Harrison: Jake said himself he's extremely happy, he loves his decision, he likes where he is, and people may not love it, but he's very happy. The entire time he's been going through this, he's never really tried to suck up to the public or done what he thinks everyone will be happy with. I like the fact that he's gone against the grain the entire time. Being the bachelor or bachelorette is really a lonely job. You're surrounded by people all the time, but it is a very isolating, lonely thing to go through. These people get butchered; personally attacked. I tell all of them, all you owe is to yourself to be honest, make your choice and go live your life.

Crazy Heart is a 2009 American musical-drama film, written and directed by Scott Cooper and based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Thomas Cobb. Jeff Bridges plays Bad Blake, a down-and-out country music singer/songwriter who tries to turn his life around after beginning a relationship with a young journalist named Jean, portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Supporting roles are played by Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Beth Grant and child actor Jack Nation. Bridges, Farrell, and Duvall also sing in the film. The film's main character is based on a combination of Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard. Cooper initially wanted to do a biopic on Haggard but found the rights to his life story were too difficult to obtain. The novel on which the film was based was actually inspired by country singer Hank Thompson. The film has been described by Leonard Maltin as "half Big Lebowski, half Urban Cowboy meets The Wrestler".

In Your 20s
Stub Out a Social Smoking Habit
Smoking is enemy number one when it comes to heart disease, and even just a few cigarettes can do damage: New research from McGill University in Montreal found that smoking just one cigarette a day stiffens your arteries by a whopping 25 percent. Plus, smoking erases the hormonal advantage you have from estrogen, which can leave you vulnerable to a heart attack before menopause, explains Dr. Bonow.
Don't Ignore the Birth Control Factor
Remember that hormonal contraceptives slightly increase the risk of blood clots, so if you've ever had one, make sure to discuss it with your doctor before going on birth control. And if you're currently a smoker, don't take oral contraceptives, because the combo can be especially dangerous, says Sharonne N. Hayes, MD, director of the Women's Heart Clinic at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Watch Your Alcohol Intake
Moderate amounts of alcohol can have a beneficial effect on your heart. (By "moderate," we mean one drink a day or about 5 ounces—but many restaurants serve far more than that.) Overdoing it can raise triglycerides, increase blood pressure and lead to weight gain, thanks to all those empty calories.
In Your 30s
Get a Grip on Stress
When you're juggling career and family, it's crucial to find stress management techniques that work. "Untamed stress has a direct negative impact on heart health," says Dr. Stevens. "The constant bombardment of adrenaline raises blood pressure and destabilizes plaque in your arteries, making it likely to cause a clot or heart attack."
Lose the Baby Weight
No, you don't have to fit into your skinny jeans by the time the baby's 6 months old, but do aim to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight within one to two years. "Carrying around extra pounds can lead to high cholesterol, high blood pressure and other heart disease risk factors," Dr. Bonow says. Also remember that it's easier to lose weight in your 30s than in your 40s, when your metabolism slows down.
Stay Social
It's important to stay connected to friends and family for the sake of your mood and heart. Research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that high levels of loneliness increase a woman's risk of heart disease by 76 percent. On the flip side, having strong social support can help lower your blood pressure and improve other cardiovascular functions. Set aside time once or twice a week to call friends, or make a monthly dinner date.
In Your 40s
Make Sleep a Priority
Thanks to peri-menopause, fluctuating hormone levels can interfere with a good night's sleep. But not getting at least seven hours of shut-eye regularly can lead to increased blood pressure, low-grade inflammation and higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol, all of which are harmful for your blood vessels and heart, explains Jennifer H. Mieres, MD, a cardiologist at New York University School of Medicine and coauthor of Heart Smart for Black Women and Latinas. Lack of sleep has also been linked to weight gain. So establish good habits: Turn in (and wake up) at the same time every day—even on weekends—and do your best to relax before going to bed, whether it's watching a favorite funny TV show or reading.
Reassess Your Risk Factors
You may discover that your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels have changed in this decade, even if you aren't doing anything differently, says Dr. Hayes. In fact, 22 percent of 40-something women have high blood pressure and 50 percent have high cholesterol (a jump from 38 percent of women in their 30s), according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Also, be sure to get your thyroid checked around 45; hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland), which becomes more common as women get older, can negatively affect your cholesterol levels as well as your heart.
Step Up Strength Training
You start to lose muscle mass more rapidly in your 40s, which causes your metabolism to slow down since muscle burns more calories than fat. Unfortunately, this makes it harder to stave off those extra pounds. To help maintain muscle and keep your metabolism going, aim for two 15-minute sessions weekly of lifting weights, using a resistance band or doing other toning exercises.
Carve out Personal Time
"Between the demands of work and family, it becomes even more challenging to find time for yourself in your 40s," says Dr. Mieres. But it's crucial to do so—not only to help ease stress but also to guard against depression, which commonly crops up in this decade and can raise your risk of heart disease. "Find at least 10 minutes of ‘me' time every day to do something—even if it's just chatting on the phone with a friend—that helps you destress and regroup," says Dr. Mieres.
In Your 50s
Move More
Around menopause, you tend to gain extra weight around your belly, which can lead to insulin resistance, inflammation and heart strain. Cardiovascular fitness also starts to decline, particularly if you're not that physically active to begin with. "Unfortunately, at this point, women have to burn more calories to stay at the same weight," Dr. Stevens says. Start taking the stairs instead of the elevator whenever you can, walk faster around the mall, or jog to the mailbox to send letters instead of sticking your hand out the car window as you drive by. Small changes really do add up.
Have an ECG
Silent heart abnormalities become more common in your 50s, and an electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart's electrical activity can pick them up, says Dr. Goldberg. Also ask your doctor if you should have a stress test; this is especially important if you're just starting to exercise.
Add Fiber
Besides being good for your cholesterol and blood sugar, pumping up your fiber intake (think whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice and flaxseeds, as well as beans, fruits and veggies) can help prevent constipation, which becomes more of a problem as you get older and your digestive system starts to slow down.
In Your 60s
Get Even More Vigilant About Screenings
After you go through menopause and get older, your blood pressure and cholesterol tend to go up, and blood vessels get stiffer. "Have your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol measured yearly," advises Dr. Goldberg.
Consider Medication
If you have hypertension or high cholesterol, the way you've been managing it before may not be enough. "As you get older, you may need more aggressive therapy," Dr. Bonow says. "High blood pressure that was controlled with one medication may now require three to control it." Talk to your doctor about whether you need to add to or adjust your medications to control your risk factors.
Be Alert to Symptoms
Now is when the first noticeable symptoms of heart disease may appear, so it's important to know what's normal for your body and be on the lookout for worrisome signs like chest discomfort, shortness of breath or changes in exercise tolerance—meaning you suddenly feel winded going up a flight of stairs or feel unusually tired for no apparent reason, says Dr. Mieres. If these appear, see your doctor pronto!

The great man speaks! Simon Cowell came down from the American Idol mountaintop yesterday for a telephone press conference with reporters, and while several reports announced that Cowell and his girlfriend Mezhgan Hussainy had recently gotten engaged, we were told he wouldn't answer any “personal questions.” So instead of rumor and innuendo about his personal life, Cowell faced rumor and innuendo about the world of Idol. Here's what Simon said...
"Judges on talent competition shows should know what they're talking about."
Cowell brought up this notion several times and likened the situation to judging figure-skating at the Olympics. “If you’re going to give a score, you genuinely need to know what you’re talking about. And I think over the years judges have been replaced by personalities.”
"No, it wasn’t meant to diss [Ellen's] credentials."
When asked if he was referring to Ellen DeGeneres, Cowell said he was talking specifically about who should fill his spot on American Idol. He said Ellen was “a good choice” because she loves music and has been an artist herself.
Don’t expect to see Howard Stern on Idol anytime soon.
Cowell gave Stern credit for the creativity and the eagerness of Stern's campaign to join the Idol panel, but said Stern doesn’t really fit any criteria for the job, even though his experience as a DJ might count for something. But he also said, "I’m fairly certain that there hasn’t been an approach at any time for Howard to do the show."
There’s a difference between rudeness and directness.
Cowell explained that he always aims "to make a difference to the contestants" and that a judge should "be honest and occasionally blunt but not be gratuitously rude." Unfortunately, he said, judges on many shows are there to be provocative first and constructive second: "You see people put in a role to play a certain role, which is quite tiresome."
He hasn’t been asked to help pick his replacement.
Cowell fielded all sorts of questions about specific people who might join the Idol panel. He said Perez Hilton is funny and has good taste in music and "might work." When asked if producer Steve Lillywhite could replace him, Cowell inquired whether the music industry veteran is handsome. Told that Lillywhite is "fairly attractive," Cowell responded, "Well, that’s not good enough."
He did brighten when asked about Noel Gallagher of Oasis, describing Gallagher as “funny and a brilliant songwriter.” But he did reveal one reservation: “Do you think people would understand him?”
But in the end, Cowell said, "You’re never going to pick anyone as good as you, are you? That’s why I don’t think anyone asks me that question."
He’s gaga for Lady Gaga.
Asked about mentors he would like to see on Idol, Cowell enthusiastically brought up Lady Gaga. “I think we should have Lady Gaga because she’s the most relevant pop artist in the world at the moment.”
He hopes for a strong finish.
Cowell said he would like “to go out on a high.” What he’s looking for this year is “someone who represents what’s going on at the moment. I’d love to find a Taylor Swift, somebody who’s relevant rather than just a contest winner.”
Idol contestants should always be striving to stand out.
Cowell said it can be difficult to remember individual contestants, and that it’s more important to put people through based on talent and not looks. “[A few years ago,] I remember every blonde girl in the competition looked identical, I couldn’t tell one from another. I think it’s good that we have a mixed bag.”
He credited Season 7 winner David Cook for coming up with interesting and original versions of well-known songs. “Don’t always try and do the obvious. Try and find something that is unique to you… and suck up to me. That always helps.”
